Lean on Me Fund

Money, as directly as we can.

The Lean on Me Fund gives money as directly as possible to people who need it the most, for the things they actually need. We trust people to know what those things are.

What we do

When life piles up

A car that won't run. A medical bill that can't wait. Rent, childcare, a new diagnosis. We want to help people in Windham County get through the moment, with their dignity and privacy first.

Neighbors and local groups

Small organizations are already doing the work of caring for this community. We work with local nonprofits as granting partners.

Room for joy

Art, spirit, and wellness are part of being okay. As we grow, we'll make room for them.

How help reaches people right now

We're new, and we're building this carefully. There isn't a public application yet. For now, we work with local nonprofits as granting partners, who help get support to the people they already know and serve. As we learn, we'll share how it's going and how to reach us.

Who we are

Mau outdoors among green trees, wearing a striped cap and a yellow palm-tree T-shirt, with a dark beard flecked with gray, looking down and to the side.

Mauricio Abascal

Treasurer

Mau has worked with nonprofits, on and off, since 1999. He's also a serial entrepreneur, and he's spent his working life moving between the for-profit and nonprofit worlds. He likes bringing what he's learned in each to the other: how to keep things simple and moving, and why the work matters in the first place. At the Lean on Me Fund he looks after the budget, banking, and behind-the-scenes systems, with one goal: keep things lean so more of the money reaches people.

How we work

  • Ask, listen, respond. Support is only help if it's what the person wants and needs.
  • Dignity first. For neighbors, partners, board, and staff alike.
  • Stay lean. Simple systems, so more dollars reach people.
  • Built around real people. Roles fit people's strengths and the capacity they actually have.
  • A pace that fits. Slow when care is needed, urgent when urgency is real.
